The five PDP governors and some aggrieved party leaders repeatedly called for the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, before peace returned to the main opposition party.

Speaking from a closed door strategic meeting hosted by former PDP Vice National Chairman Olabode George in Lagos State on Sunday, the G-5 governors led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State declared that their “Group of Integrity” is still holding on. The position taken earlier on the removal of Mr. Ayu in Port Harcourt, Rivers.

The group, with the leadership of the party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, however, reiterated that the window for reconciliation in the party remains open.

Samuel Ortom of Benue, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and Mr. Wike among others began calling for Mr. Ayu’s removal from office shortly after Mr. Abubakar won the party’s presidential ticket.

Addressing journalists after a two-hour meeting in Lagos, former Plateau Governor Jonah Jang said the group reached the decision after careful consideration of developments in the party.

“After careful consideration of the developments in our party, we have decided to stand by the decisions we made at the Port Harcourt meeting,” he said.

“And we hereby reiterate that the window for reconciliation in our great party, the PDP, remains open,” Mr. Jang said in his brief comments.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other PDP leaders at the meeting included former governors Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo State), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Donald Duke (Cross River), Jonah Jang (Plateau).

Aggrieved party leaders have repeatedly said that Mr. Ayu should resign in the interest of fairness and justice to bring peace to the party.

The aggrieved group insisted on the need for the South to produce the national chairman of the party after Mr. Ayu because the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2023 election is from the north.
