The The absence of Genk teammates Mike Trésor and Bryan Heynen from Belgium’s World Cup squad in Qatar has come as a big surprise for Nigeria international Paul Onuachu. PUNCH Sports supplement the reports
The Belgian Football Federation on Friday announced the 26-man squad for the biggest football showpiece in Qatar, leaving out Trésor and Heynen, much to the Nigerian’s disappointment.
Apart from Onuachu, who has scored an astonishing 13 league goals in 14 games for Genk this season, both players have played important roles in Genk’s stunning start to the season.
Trésor, a midfielder, has been outstanding for the league leaders with five goals and 13 assists in 17 games, while Heynen has six goals with two assists from his midfield.
Trésor, 23, has been the best creator in the Jupiler Pro League, with an unmatched 13 assists.
Despite an impressive start to the 2022/23 campaign, Roberto Martinez left both midfielders out for the trip to Qatar.
Talking HLNThe Super Eagles forward said he was shocked by the failure of the two players.
“I was shocked when I heard that and I wasn’t the only one,” Onuachuk said.
“You think the whole of Belgium has a hard time with this, don’t you? Look at Mikel’s stats. Nobody does it better. Sometimes it’s crazy how things work in football.’
“If sport was fair, Mike and Bryan Heynen would be there in Qatar. Even the top of Belgian football knows that these two deserve it.”
