The United States Consulate in Nigeria has trained 150 media professionals for election reporting ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the two-day session for the South-South geopolitical zone ended on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking at the event via video conference, the US Consulate, Will Stevens, assured the support of the US government to deepen democracy in Nigeria.
Stevens was replaced by US Consulate Public Affairs Officer, Joe Kruzich.
According to him, the Election Reporting Project is an intervention project sponsored by the US Consulate to assist Nigerian journalists, videographers and photojournalists to adequately cover the 2023 elections.
He explained that the ERP is part of the US Consulate’s ongoing support for the growth of democracy in Nigeria in partnership with the West African Broadcast and Media Academy and the Enugu Literary Society.
As reported by NAN, the main facilitator is Professor Chris Ulasi, School of Communication and Chair, Department of Radio, Television and Film, Texas Southern University Houston, USA.
Other facilitators include former Dean of Communications, Lagos State University, Professor Lai Oso and Associated Press Investigative Journalist, Grace Ekpu.
Earlier, Ulasi, a Nigerian university based in the United States of America, noted that the world’s attention was on Nigeria and urged journalists to effectively and professionally report on the electoral process.
The ongoing workshop sessions across the geopolitical zones, which involved broadcast, print and online journalism, were earlier held in Ibadan, while the Lagos session is scheduled for November 24.
On behalf of the participants, Broadcast Journalist Carl Orakwue thanked the organizers for the workshops and described them on time.
