COP27 ended in the early hours of Sunday, giving way to one of the world’s most anticipated events, the 2022 World Cup, which starts later the same day.

The global climate summit on Saturday reached a landmark conclusion on the loss and damage agenda. The parties agreed to establish a historical loss and damage fund as part of the Sharm El-Sheikh Implementation Plan on climate change after the issue was put on the agenda for the first time.

The new fund will see donors contribute to a global fund to save lives and livelihoods from climate change-related disasters.

This agreement is remarkable, given the opposition of some parties. Countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan among others are likely to benefit when this fund is implemented.

At the same time, significant progress was made in keeping the 1.5°C global temperature rise target intact.

More commitments and commitments were made during the two-week conference on adaptation, mitigation and financing, among others.

The next Conference of the Parties (COP28) is scheduled for 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.

The World Cup is about to start

Some 12 years after Qatar won the competition, the stage is finally set for the first World Cup to be hosted in the Middle East.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup has become one of the most controversial in the heat of the bad press it has received rightly or wrongly since it was awarded.

From stories of mistreatment of migrant workers, hostility towards LGBTQ people to bans on selling alcohol in stadiums; perhaps no other FIFA World Cup host has received the kind of intense attention that Qatar receives.

All these criticisms led FIFA president Gianni Infantino shout out Western countries for hypocrisy in the press conference held on the eve of the tournament on Saturday.

“For what we Europeans have been doing around the world for the last 3,000 years, we should apologize before we start giving people moral lessons for the next 3,000 years,” said the head of world football’s governing body.

The opening match pits hosts Qatar against South American qualifiers Ecuador on Sunday evening at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Sports outlet PREMIUM TIMES predicts that the match will be low-scoring and that Qatar will win against Ecuador.

Russia and Ukraine blame the Polish explosion on trade

on tuesdaya missile hit Ukraine and spilled into a Polish community, Przewodów, across the Ukrainian border.

Russia and Ukraine traded blame while NATO and its member states were on high alert, but later called for calm.

US President Joe Biden stated it is possible that the missile did not come from Russia, and that the Ukrainian interceptors may have fallen on Polish soil.

NATO’s Jens Stoltenberg he said a preliminary analysis suggested that a Ukrainian air defense missile had landed in Poland to defend Ukrainian territory against Russian cruise missile attacks.

“But I’ll be clear, this is not Ukraine’s fault,” he said, insisting that Russia was still ultimately responsible.

    Investigations are still ongoing.

North Korea’s Kim has revealed his daughter

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first time on Saturday he allowed the press to take pictures of his daughter.

Father and daughter were photographed walking hand in hand inspecting the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Saturday that Kim Jong Un participated in the ICBM test “along with his beloved daughter and wife”.

No one knew of the existence of the daughter, who was not named until Saturday.
