Former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson says Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi should not have thrown his shirt at Everton fans after their defeat at Bournemouth, PUNCH Sports supplement the reports
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former goalkeeper said Frank Lampard’s side went to the fans at full-time to show their appreciation after traveling to watch the away game.
The Toffees were humiliated 3-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday, the Merseyside club’s second defeat at the Vitality Stadium in a week after crashing out of the EFL Cup with a 4-1 loss.
Everton’s traveling fans were furious after Saturday’s defeat and the Nigeria international saw it first-hand after his shirt was handed to the crowd, but he quickly returned to the pitch.
Asked by Football Insider about his thoughts on away end stages, Robinson said: “A lot of times players go to the fans to say thank you. They want to show their appreciation for spending the money to come and see them.
“The players will know that they have been poor and will almost be ashamed to pass. They are not looking for fanfare. They just wanted to show their appreciation.
“Look, Iwobi shouldn’t have thrown his shirt. It was probably a bad choice. Sharing your shirt is something that is done during the celebration.
“In Iwobi’s defence, he has been one of the best players this season. I really like the way he plays.”
