On Friday, gunmen killed a former Commissioner of Rural Development there Enugu StateSouth East Nigeria.
The victim, Gab Onuzulike, was shot dead along with his brother while returning from a burial ceremony at Nkpokolo-River in Oji River Local Government Area of the state.
Mr. Onuzulike is a former chairman of the board.
The ex-commissioner and his brother were ambushed with guns.
The Enugu State Police Spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
Mr Ndukwe said the gunmen “infiltrated from the neighboring Anambra community of Oji-River” before killing the former commissioner and his brother on Friday.
He said a joint security team launched an anti-attack operation in response to a distress call about the attack.
“The team quickly responded to a distress call following the incident and apprehended the armed men from Inyi Community of the council, who were fleeing to Anambra,” he said.
The police spokesman said that the two armed joint security operatives – made up of police and army officials – were killed.

He said a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV that was earlier taken from the victims was recovered.

According to police, an AK-47 rifle with two magazines loaded with ammunition, a Toyota Camry SUV and a RAV4 SUV used by the gunmen were among the items recovered in the operation.
“Meanwhile, the hunt for the assailants, many of whom fled into a nearby forest with serious gunshot wounds in the ensuing duel, was due to the superior firepower of the joint team,” Mr Ndukwe said.
Increase attacks
Enugu, like other states in southeastern Nigeria, has seen a recent surge in deadly attacks.
The latest incident comes just three weeks after the gunmen hostage some returning university students and other travelers in Ekwegbe, a community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the state.
