American rapper Future sampled a song by Nigerian star Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, on his Billboard hit ‘Wait For U’.
The sampled track that formed the track’s hook is ‘Higher’, a track from Openiyi’s ‘For Broken Ears’ EP.
Future previously stated that the song, which also featured Canadian rapper Drake, was a sample.
Appreciating the song’s singer’s voice, she tweeted: “As soon as I heard the @temsbaby sample from @atljacobbeatz it instantly connected to my soul.
“Even though ‘Wait For U’ is a sample and not an original recording, I still put it with @temsbaby if you’re not familiar with his work. Thank you, Tems.”
Released on April 29, ‘Wait For U’ is the seventh track from Future’s new LP, ‘I Never Liked You’.
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts a week after its release, giving Tems his first number one spot on the prestigious chart.
In an interview with Billboard, when asked if he was surprised by the success of the song after Future sampled it, Tems said, “I’ve always appreciated ‘Higher’ before people appreciated ‘Higher.’
Tems continues to solidify his position as one of the most noteworthy songwriters in the world today. Rihanna’s recent comeback hit was ‘Lift Me Up’, the soundtrack to Marvel’s Black Panther film ‘Wakanda Forever’.
