World football’s governing body FIFA is investigating how celebrity chef Salt Bae gained “unfair access” to the pitch after the World Cup final, where he eagerly posed for photos with stunned Argentina players, including a confused and angry Lionel Messi.
Salt Bae, whose real name is Nusret Gokce, was pictured holding and kissing the trophy after Argentina beat France in Sunday’s final in Qatar.
The Turkish businessman was heavily criticized for twice grabbing Messi’s arm as he tried to deflect the unwanted attention.
They also took pictures with Angel di Maria, Lisandro Martinez and were even seen sinking their teeth into another player’s medal.
FIFA rules state that the World Cup trophy can only be held by the winners of the tournament and FIFA officials and heads of state.
“Following a review, FIFA is currently determining how to gain access to the pitch following the closing ceremony at Lusail Stadium on December 18,” a spokesman told the BBC.
“Appropriate internal measures will be taken.”
Salt Baek, 39, owns a chain of luxury restaurants around the world, including Beverly Hills in Los Angeles and Knightsbridge in London.
His technique of preparing and seasoning the meat has become an internet meme.
Earlier in the World Cup, he posted a video of himself sitting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino during a match.
