Commendations Watford fans have rallied behind defender William Troost-Ekong following his loan move to Italian Serie A side Salernitana. PUNCH Sports supplement the reports
Troost-Ekong will return to Italy three years after joining Watford from Udinese, a move that saw the club gain promotion to the Premier League in 2021 before being relegated again at the end of the 2021/2022 season.
According to reports, Watford have agreed a loan move for Troost-Ekong to Salernitana until the end of the current campaign with a buyout clause if they remain in the top flight, who will also be reunited with former Udinese boss Davide Nicola.
The Italian club presented the player on Tuesday with a message of appreciation confirming his withdrawal from the Championship squad on Monday night, which attracted a flurry of messages of goodwill from Hornets supporters.
“The time has come for me to pass on from Watford FC after 3 special seasons shared with everyone involved. From everyone in the restaurant, security staff, stadium volunteers to doctors and office staff and everything in between, you have made my time worth it,” Ekong’s message reads. in one
A fan of the club, @VVitchfynder, shared how Ekong helped his son build confidence.
“The best for your future. You were the first player my son met at the open house. He was very nervous and didn’t want anyone to come near him. You were so nice and welcoming, it gave him the courage to meet and talk to other players. A real credit to the club.”
One of the club’s supporters in Finland, Jason, replied: “It’s sad to see you go, ours. Good luck!”
“Truly ours, you will be remembered as a fighter, leader, mentor and true Hornet. Salernitan’s gain is our loss but in return you have given us wonderful memories. Fly high Super Eagle I wish you all the best always,” wrote another fan, Natasha Wright.
“Good luck for the future Will. It is very sad to see such a passionate player with a real love for our club leave. Most supporters have been able to see what you have brought to this club and you have always had your back,” Allan Tarrant wrote.
A famous Watford fan and ticket collector, Rich, Ekong also recounted some of the club’s iconic goals and moments.
“Top lad, next to a leader we’ve had for a long time, respected in the dressing room and scored a goal in Luton Vs. What more could we ask for? You will be missed as a voice, no doubt you will leave your current coach as impressed as many of us, it all says it really! Good luck WTE”.
The Nigeria international has made 17 appearances in all competitions for Watford this season and also has a goal to his name in the Championship, despite falling out of favor at the start of the season as the club continue to push for a play-off spot.
His new club, Salernitana, are 16th in the Serie A table with 18 points from 19 games, six points off the relegation zone.
