    Tiwa Savage is a British-Nigerian female musician and songwriter. She started her music career as a backup for British singer, George Michael and American singer, Mary J. Blige. After she participated in the UK edition of The X Factor and graduated from Berklee College of Music, Tiwa Savage signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009. After she was inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, which made her moved back to Nigeria and signed with Mavin Records in 2012 from there she became a global star.

    Tiwatope Savage popularly known as Tiwa Savage or Tiwa was born on the 5th of February, 1980 in Isale Eko, Lagos State, Nigeria. When Tiwa was 11 years old, her family relocated to London, there she completed her secondary school education. While attending secondary school, Tiwa Savage was a trombone player for her school’s orchestra band.

    Tiwa Savage graduated with a degree in accounting from the University of Kent, afterwards, she started working at The Royal Bank of Scotland. Tiwa Savage did backup vocals for British singer George Michael when she was 16 years of age, and lent vocals to other musicians such as American singer, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli and Ms. Dynamite.

    Tiwa enrolled at Berklee College of Music where she graduated with a degree in professional music in 2007. While reminiscing about her experiences there, she said she was motivated by the drive and passion of the younger students at Berklee College of Music. She also mentioned that she needed the school’s atmosphere.

    However, in 2006, Tiwa Savage participated in the UK edition of The X Factor and advanced to the final 24, unfortunately, she ended up being the 12th person to be evicted in the competition. While participating in the UK edition of the X Factor, Tiwa had difficulty dealing with the limelight.

    She said, “You have to always realize that people are watching. When I got the bad news that I wasn’t getting through (to the final 12) it was really painful. But you still have to learn how to hold that until you get home. Because you don’t want to just let everything out. People admire you and want to see that you’re strong; they don’t want to see you breaking down.”

    In 2009, Tiwa Savage signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The deal allowed her to write for people such as Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia, Monica and Mýa. She received songwriting credits for her contribution to Monica’s soul-tinged ballad “Catch Me”. Tiwa’s collaboration with Fantasia on the song “Collard Greens & Cornbread” earned the American recording artist a Grammy nomination in 2010. Tiwa Savage wrote Jaicko’s “Oh Yeah”, featuring legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, and Deluna’s “Push Push”, featuring singer Akon.

    Tiwa Savage also performed background vocals on Whitney Houston’s album I Look to You (2009). Inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, Tiwa Savage moved back to Nigeria. In 2012, she signed with a record label owned by Don Jazzy which is Mavin Records.

    Her debut studio album Once Upon a Time that was released on the 3rd of July 2013 was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and for Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies 2014. Savage’s second studio album R.E.D was released on 19 December 2015. It yielded two singles: “My Darlin” and “Standing Ovation”. In June 2016, Savage signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation which makes her the first Nigerian artist to be signed to the label. In September 2017, she released her debut EP Sugarcane. R.E.D and Sugarcane have both been nominated for Best Album at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

    In 2014, Tiwa Savage was the first female Nigerian artiste to be nominated for BET awards. In this same year (2014), she also won best female category in the Channel O music awards show. She was also nominated in 2018 for the same award. In 2014, she was also nominated for the MTV European Music award which was later nominated for and won in 2018.

    In November 2018, Tiwa won “Best African Act” at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards,and this win made her to become the first woman to win the category. In May 2019, she announced her record deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) and also exit from Mavin Records. It is worthy for you to know that Tiwa Savage sings in English and Yoruba; her music is a blend of the following genres of music:

    On 18 August 2020, Tiwa Savage released the track list for her album, Celia. The album was later released on the 28th of August, 2020. She also released her 5th studio album Water and Garri on August 20, 2021 through Universal Music Group, Motown Records and Capitol Records.

    Tiwa Savage was married to Tunji Balogun popularly known as Tee Billz. On 23 November 2013, the couple held their traditional marriage at the Ark in Lekki. The couple’s white wedding was held on 26 April 2014 at the Armani Hotel in Dubai.

    On the 1st of January, 2015, Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz announced that they were expecting their first child together. Six months later, Tiwa Savage gave birth to a son whose name is Jamil Balogun.

    On the 28th of April, 2016, Tee Billz accused his wife of infidelity and his mother-in-law of witchcraft. In a 45-minute interview conducted by ThisDay newspaper and Pulse Nigeria, Tiwa Savage extensively addressed her husband’s lengthy social media posts regarding their marriage. Tiwa Savage debunked her husband’s infidelity claims, she went further to accuse him of financial recklessness, drug addiction and abandonment. She also said her marriage to him was over.

    On the 19th of July 2021, Tiwa lost her father after battling an undisclosed illness for a couple of years. Currently, Tiwa Savage has 4 albums which are:
