    Introduction

    Tems is a Nigerian musician and song writer. In 2021, due to her collaboration with Drake (on the song “Fountains” from his album “Certified Lover Boy”) and Wizkid (on the song “Essence”) she earned two US top 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100. Tems also has a Grammy Award nomination due to the remix of Essence after Justin Bieber was featured. She has also won two NAACP Image Awards and a Soul Train Music Awards.

    In the same year 2021, Tems was ranked number one on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart and also number five on the Billboard Emerging Artist chart. In September 2021, RCA records signed Tems, and her second EP If Orange Was a Place was released, which reached the top ten on the Billboard World Albums chart.

    Tems Biography

    Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems or Tems Baby. Temilade Openiyi was born on the 11th of June, 1995 in Lagos state, Nigeria. She was born to the family of Mr and Mrs Openiyi (a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father). Her family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after she was born. Unfortunately, her parents got divorced when she was five years of age. After the divorce, she moved back to Nigeria (precisely Lagos state) with her mother, they resided in Ilupeju before moving to Lekki then Ajah in Lagos state. Tems attended Dowen College before moving to to South Africa for her Tertiary education. At school, Tems was noticed by her music teacher and she learned to play the piano. She also practice singing with her brother’s guitar accompaniment.

    Tems started her music career professionally after quitting her job to pursue a career in music which led her to record a song she composed on her own “Mr Rebel.”

    In August 2019, she released a hit single “Try Me.”

    In 2020, DJ Edu chose her as one of “ten artists to watch.” That same year, she was featured alongside Nigerian musician, Davido by American singer Khalid on an Afrobeats remix “Know Your Worth.”

    On 25 of September 2020, Tems released her debut extended play For Broken Ears, it was produced primarily by Tems and her single “Damages” from the EP became another follow up hit to “Try Me”, peaking at number one on the Apple Music Nigeria and number six on the then-newly launched TurnTable Top 50 chart and garnering five million views on YouTube.

    In 2021, her collaboration with Wizkid on their song “Essence” earned her a number one spot on BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart and also earned her first career entry on Billboard Hot 100 at number 9. Thanks for the collaboration, Tems won a Soul Train Music Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Global Music Performance.

    However, Wizkid appeared as a guest Artist on Tems LA event (Vibe Szn, 2021 Tour), where they both performed “Essence” for the first time.

    On 8 November 2020, she was included in The Future Awards Africa: Class of 2020.

    On December 14, 2020, Tems and Nigerian singer Omah Lay were arrested in Uganda for performing live during the forced stop by the authorities for contacting the pandemic of COVID-19 in the country. The singers were released after two days of detention by the police force.

    On 2 September 2021, it was announced on Billboard that Tems was set to feature on rapper Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album. The collaboration with Drake on the song “Fountains” earned her her second Billboard Hot 100 entry debuting at number twenty six.

    On 15 September 2021, Tems released her second extended play titled If “Orange Was a Place,” primarily produced by GuiltyBeatz and supported by the single “Crazy Tings” which peaked at number three on the UK Afrobeats chart. It also debuted at number seven on the Billboard World Albums chart and at number nine on the Heatseekers Album chart. Her collaboration with Brent Faiyaz “Found” from the EP debuted at number seventeen on the Hot R&B Songs chart, number thirty three on the New Zealand hot singles chart and number one on the UK Afrobeats Chart.

    Tems has received multiple award nominations, winning two NAACP Image Awards, two BET Awards on the 27th of June, 2022 and a Soul Train Music Award.
