Ismael Sadjo Cross River State emerged victorious in the third Community Marathon Series held in Asaba last weekend.
Sadjo took the first ribbon in the men’s category of the race in 33 minutes while Plateau State’s Rose Akusho won the women’s event in 38 minutes.
Sadjo and Akusho, who were listed as elite runners after their success in the Festac and Lekki 10km road race, took the lead from the 2km mark in the race and bagged N500,000 prize money each.
In the men’s category, Omoro Promise emerged as the first runner-up, while Okechukwu Donatus was the second runner-up.
In the female category, the second and third positions went to Patience Goyang of Plateau State and Abiye David James of Ondo State, respectively.
Some of the athletes who suffered fatigue during and after the race were given medical attention by a team of doctors from the Nigerian Red Cross, headed by Philip Ibonye, Red Cross Society Secretary, Oshimili South, Delta State.
The Project Manager of the Marathon Series, Moses Nwanze, commended all the athletes who registered for the Asaba race.
At the event, he was the CEO of the Delta State Sports Commission, represented by Juliet Esuku, Director of Sports Development, Okonma Franca, Director of Information and Public Relations and Emuobo Egalase, Deputy Director of Sports Organization, DSSC.
