Some armed men suspected to be members of a criminal group confronted the security operatives in a shootout that lasted for about an hour.
It was reported that the incident happened late on Saturday at Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Aguleri is the birthplace of the former governor of the state, Willie Obiano.
Armed men reportedly invaded the community and started firing before police operatives stormed the area and the two parties continued to engage in a gun battle.
The reason for the invasion could not be determined, but sources in the area said that the young people were going to a police station in the community, before the police operatives repelled them.
However, no one was killed, but sources said some policemen and members of the armed gang were injured in the firing.
No fewer than 15 people have been arrested so far and are in custody, according to police sources.
Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, Toochukwu Ikenga, said the situation has been brought under control.
“The incident happened late on Saturday and the situation has been brought under control, on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the operation brought police operatives to the spot and prevented the youths from attacking the police station.
“We have made some arrests and recovered some dangerous weapons. In the meantime, other conflict resolution channels are in place to listen to the affected youth.
“We have also increased patrols in the area, aimed at increasing peace and security, please. More details will be announced.”
