Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man, Adeyemi Babatunde, for allegedly killing a 46-year-old driver, Obafunsho Ismail, following a petty dispute.
The incident happened on December 8, 2022, at about 8:00pm, when the suspect, who was driving a Lexus SUV with custom number plates in Olu of Oya, rear-ended the car of the deceased, causing damage to the vehicle.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Thursday, said: “The deceased, Ismail Obafunsho, there and then got out of his car and asked the suspect to get down to assess the extent of the damage and find a solution to it.
“But the suspect, Adeyemi Babatunde, refused to get out of his vehicle and was making efforts to escape.
“This enraged the deceased, he insisted that the suspect should get off, and as a result, he sat on the hood of the suspect’s car to prevent him from fleeing the scene.
“Later the suspect got down and warned the deceased to leave the hood of his car if he did not want to waste his life.
“Afterwards, he returned to the car and drove at high speed. The deceased fell out of the car, and the car ran over him. Dissatisfied, the suspect turned the vehicle around and drove over the deceased again to ensure that he was indeed dead.
“After the action was over, he ran away with the vehicle.
“He was later intercepted at his father’s house in Kemta Idi aba area of Abeokuta where he was arrested by men of the State Motor Traffic Division on December 20, 2022; The vehicle he used to commit the crime was also taken back to the station.”
The PPRO said Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole ordered the transfer of the suspect to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
