Former Green Eagles captain Segun Odegbami has raised the alarm over the deteriorating health condition of former teammate Henry Nwosu.
While expressing fear over Nwosu’s medical condition, Odegbami in a statement on Sunday said urgent proactive measures are needed to save the ailing former international.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu, who was the youngest player in the 1980 AFCON winning team, can no longer sit or eat alone and is losing his memory.
Nwosu stated that he can no longer hear and speak, insisting that the situation has worsened in the last week.
“The sad news I received this morning is that Henry Nwosu’s health is not improving. His condition is getting worse day by day. We must do everything we can to let him die.”
An official of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) paid him a visit at the Asaba General Hospital yesterday. Henry’s condition was so bad that the official could not take a picture of himself to show the world, Odegbami added.
He stated that although he has received a lot of help recently, the reality is that Nwosu, who apart from playing, also coached some Nigerian national teams, has been in the same hospital for six weeks.
Odegbami lamented that Nwosu’s condition has worsened.
“He can no longer sit without help. He can’t walk, he’s losing his memory; He is no longer eating and must be fed only liquids. He is losing his sight and hardly recognizes people; he can neither hear nor speak again.

“Assistance has surely come from the Delta State Government. He took full responsibility for Henry’s past, present and future medical bills.’
His Imo state has also pledged similar support. Several other philanthropists, including the Femi Otedola Foundation, have expressed their desire to help Odegbami.
“While we are very grateful to the hospital, the governments of Delta and Imo State and all those who are helping, it is clear that other medical options must be explored and urgent action must be taken to stop his slow death. Henry Nwosu should not die with the help available and promised with all that.

“He needs a higher level of medical attention. The Specialist section of the Asaba General Hospital handling his case may be doing the best they can, but the physical evidence before us is that his health is deteriorating, and he needs a higher level of medical intervention, NOW.
“To save Henry’s life, we have to look at other options. Especially taking them abroad or to a reputed top medical facility in Nigeria for additional opinion and care,” he added.
“PFAN He has consulted with Henry’s family and they agree that other opinions about his health need to be looked at quickly. The Femi Otedola Foundation may send a specialist to see Asabar in the next few days to get additional assessment and opinion on his health condition and what to do differently to help the former Nigerian national team international footballer and captain.
“We enjoin all Nigerians to join the family in praying for the recovery of Henry Nwosu,” Odegbami reiterated.
