The Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the Nigeria Professional Football League, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has confirmed that the 2022/23 league will start on January 8, 2023 in an abbreviated format with the league draws billed for December 28. PUNCH the reports
The new start date was agreed at a meeting of IMC and club representatives in Abuja on Wednesday.
“Our conclusions at the meeting were simple, we are holding the draws on December 28 and then we will start the league on January 8,” Elegbeley said. PUNCH.
He also confirmed that the IMC would make exit grants to clubs, but dismissed reports that a fee had been agreed.
“We will give them a start-up grant, but the amount will be determined by our sponsors. We have not given an exact amount but we will try to raise some money to start. All stories about N500m, N25m or N10m are not true.
“We just finished a pre-season tournament where we gave each team N10m and the winner, 3SC, got N100m which we paid recently. So we don’t make promises, we play,” Elegbeley said.
Meanwhile, a representative of the club, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, announced that the proposal for a December 28 start had been abandoned to give more time to financially prepare for the start of the NPFL league.
“The IMC proposed December 28, but it wasn’t going to work for us, so we reached an agreement for January 8,” the source said.
