Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has stated that Christians in the north are in favor of the Labor Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Lawal, who was speaking in an interview on Channels Television Politics Todaywho was monitored by our correspondent, said Obi had a better chance of winning the election than the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.
When asked why he endorsed the LP presidential candidate, the APC leader said a government of Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed duo will give Nigeria the peace it wants.
“We are politicians and realists. We want to support a political party that has the power to win and govern; then address all other social dynamics such as marginalization, insecurity and inclusivity.
“So, if you look at it, only four political parties deserve our discussion, and we have discussed with them. Kwankwaso is good material for president, for example. We have discussed with him, but according to our parameters we look at his tendency and chances of winning the elections, it is very small.
“We looked at the Labor Party and we think the chances are very high. A government led by Peter Obi and Datti will give Nigeria the desired peace. In fact, he will rid us of this oligarch.
“We don’t need compromise (by Peter Obi). The matter is very simple; If you go to every Christian town in Nigeria, they will tell you, there may be no other candidate for other political parties, they will tell you we are doing (sic) Peter Obi. If you go to church, everyone do (sic) Peter Obi.
“There are still some Christians hanging around the APC, of course; whatever their reason, we do not condemn them. Some are in PDP. In the north of the average Christian level, they are the Labor Party.’
According to Lawal, the options were more than winning the election on the first ballot.
He further stated that the APC was not in the polls mainly because of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, which he said had antagonized the Christians, adding that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would wipe out the northern votes.
“My thought is that Bola (Tinubu) will not get 25% Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Yobe, maybe Borno 25%, maybe. No Hausa-Fulani state, going nowhere. Now he has turned against the Christians, so he loses. Southwest will get it because of the affinity and the ‘it’s our turn’ syndrome. Atiku will sweep most of the northern states,” Lawal said.
