… guarantees more support, better pay
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday congratulated the management, players and supporters of Bendel Insurance for their feat in the just concluded Nigeria National League Super 4 tournament, assuring the government’s support for the state football team.
The Insurers emerged champions of the NNL Super 4 tournament after beating Doma United FC of Gombe State 2-1 in the finals played at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Obaseki, while receiving the NNL trophy at the Government House in Benin City, applauded the team for their unbeaten run in the tournament.
He said: “We will continue to support and encourage you for this great feat you have achieved. We need to start looking at how to build a permanent stadium for you, as well as a hostel and other camping facilities. We would work with the lieutenant governor to make sure we start the building once the budget is approved.
“In terms of pay, especially when you are in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), it is only fair that your pay should be adjusted.
“We know that you will be traveling a lot this season and to ease the stress, we will buy you a new bus. We will also help Peña with another bus to travel with you around the country and continue supporting the club.”
Reassuring the government’s commitment to the development of the sport, the governor added: “My administration promised in 2016 that we will revive the sport and make the state the envy of all in terms of sports in Nigeria. We have fulfilled our commitment to take the club to where it is today.
“We have worked hard to change the way sports are managed in Edo State. Or we created the Sports Commission, renovated the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, built 20 mini stadiums across the state and identified other facilities, federal or state, renovating so that we have venues for sports activities.
“Also, we made sure that sport is an essential component of our curriculum in schools, to capture young people. These are some of the steps we have taken to become the nation’s first sports state. This victory for Bendel Insurance has shown that we are gradually getting there.”
Obaseki added: “To sustain what we are doing and where we are going, we cannot continue to rely on government. Our goal is to introduce ourselves to the world and show corporate organizations how well you are suited to invest in Bendel Insurance.”
