The Chairman of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, made the call during the 2023 Workers Day celebrations in Abuja on Monday.
Mr. Ajaero also called for a review of the basic salaries of civil servants to reduce the gap between the remuneration of other civil servants and those in other public services.
He said that the extension of the years of service should be done round, as it has been done in other public services in the country.
“Now only a few other establishments remain outside, including the basic civil service.
“For this reason, we request that the retirement age and the entire public service, including the civil service, be revised until the age of 65 and 40,” he said.
Mr. Ajaero said the union had, over the years, called for a review of the salary but it was yet to receive the attention of the federal government.
“It is necessary to remember that over the years we have continued to demand an increase in the salaries of basic civil servants in order to reduce the gap between their remuneration and those in other public services.
“They all have the same educational qualifications and similar work experience. So why the difference?” asked Mr. Ajaero.

Regarding the free payment, the NLC chairman said the union leaders had, on several occasions, presented the issue to the government without a positive response.
“My friends, we have consistently presented the issue of free payment to the government but nothing has been done in this regard.

“As you all know, the concept of free payment to employees is based on the fact that those who have worked for public institutions or private companies are entitled to a golden handshake from their employers.
“In this way, the gratuity is a financial benefit that the employer gives to his employee at the time of retirement, without the employee making any financial contribution to the fund,” he said.
According to him, this amount of money is intended to allow the retiree to finance any post-retirement work he wants.
“The Pension Law did not abolish the free payment and we demand its restoration in many public sectors that have been suspended,” said the employee responsible.
