A Nigerian teenage basketball player, Seyi Sodiq, has died aged 18 in Abuja after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Sodiq, who played for Hungary’s Alba Fehérvár men’s basketball team, reportedly returned home to Abuja on the advice of his parents, who were diagnosed with serious health problems last fall.
According to Hungary Today, Sodiq decided not to undergo surgery in Hungary after much deliberation, but returned to Nigeria for traditional treatment in February 2022.
After receiving treatment in Abuja, Sodiq resumed basketball training a few months ago and was preparing to return to Hungary to join his Alba teammates before he died suddenly on Saturday morning after his heart stopped beating a week before his 19th birthday.
The club held a minute’s silence for Sodiq before the league game on Saturday night.
The memorial on the club’s website recalls that the African basketball player arrived in Hungary at the age of 13 and stood out from the local field with his excellent performances in the youth championships. At the age of 16, he made his debut in the senior team of the Székesfehérvár club.
