Prof. Uche Azikiwe, wife of Nigeria’s first president and former premier of the Eastern Region, the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, has urged Nigerians to look out for a presidential candidate with integrity and ability to lead the country.

Azikiwe, in an interview with The PUNCH, said he was ready to support any of the candidates who would end insecurity and poverty.

He said: “Nigerians should look to someone who has integrity and ability and persistence to lead Nigeria. And I think that is what people see in Obi. However, it depends on the choice of each individual. We cannot say that everyone should vote for Obi. Not Obi. If you know you’re going to vote and see a reason not to, that’s your choice.

“Personally, all I want is the best for Nigeria. Anyone who will stop the insecurity, poverty and all kinds of indices that often shun Nigeria, I am totally for the person. If it is Obi, let him come and if it is Atiku, so be it”.

Don also noted that her late husband was at different times committed to the unity of Nigeria, adding that Nigerian leaders should take it from him.

“My husband made a commitment for the unity of Nigeria. That is his legacy. Anytime he would have a problem, he would surrender if the country is one and there is peace. Because someone fought against the British; when it came time to be Prime Minister, because it was impossible He saw that it would lead to the disintegration of Nigeria.

“He said that the North was not ready, the West, it was a geographical compression. But because he wanted that Independence, he said that he would not mind being the ceremonial president. Peace and unity are what are holding Nigeria together. Our leaders should learn to compromise. If you know what you are pushing will cause discord, leave it and go find what will keep us together.’
