On Thursday, Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha called BasketmouthHe clarified the speculations about his marital status in an interview with a Ghanaian TV station, TV3News.
Basketmouth, who was married to Elsie Okpocha for 12 years, announced his separation in an Instagram post in December 2022.
The comedian, who has recently been in the news over his beef with his colleague Ay Makun, said it was necessary to set the record straight because people thought it was a publicity stunt.
In the interview session, however, he refused to disclose the reasons for the separation, saying that it was for reasons known to him.
The father of three who hails from Abia State stated that he does not bring his private life on social media but he had to tell people the truth.
He said: “I’m separated right now, and people thought it was a joke. Some people said it was a way to promote a show, and I told them they don’t know my design. I don’t take my account to platforms like that and put my stuff there.
“It was something I had to do, and for reasons I knew, I did it. We are nice, and everything is fine. It was after 12 years; we turned 12 in November, and that happened in December.”
Difficult Decision
In December 2022, the comedian released a statement on social media announcing that he and Elsie had split.

Basketmouth made the announcement on his verified social media page, where he revealed the difficult decision to split with his wife.
The comedian stated that he and Elsie would not deprive their children of all the necessary attention as parents.

He also asked the citizens to respect their privacy to go through the separation phase.
He wrote: “As it hurts me to bring my personal life into the public space, the situation is unavoidable. After much consideration, my wife and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage.
“As we go our separate ways, we will continue to work together to give our beautiful children all the care and love they need – guidance and support. We humbly ask that you respect our privacy as we navigate these times. Thank you.”
Love has gone sour
As celebrity marriages continue to spark reactions and conversations when they split, one would wonder why Basketmouth and Elsie’s love suddenly turned sour.
In 2019, in an interview on YouTube channel Wedding Channel Africa TV, Basketmouth and his wife described their union as a good marriage and divorce will not be an option for them.

Elsie, in the interview session, said that divorce was not possible because she loved her husband too much for that.
Basketmouth said: “Nothing can cause our divorce. The point is, no good marriage ends in divorce, and we have a good marriage, so nothing.”
Also, in November 2021, the couple bumped into each other as they celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary.
After news of the split, fans wondered what would go wrong in a year.
