One of Nigeria’s most talented filmmakers, Mo Abudu, has increased his global presence with the launch of a new film outfit called ‘Mo Abudu Films’.
The EbonyLife Television boss also made his directorial debut with two short films, ‘Iyawo Mi’ and ‘Her Perfect Life’, released in his new outfit.
In a statement shared with Variety, the ‘Blood Sisters’ producer expressed excitement about his latest steps in promoting his career.
“It is my passionate belief that true artistic expression requires complete freedom, and I have given it great pleasure to direct my first two short films with the launch of Mo Abudu Films,” he said.
Both films focusing on mental health will be screened at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, which runs from August 4-12, 2023. ‘Iyawo Mi’ will also be screened at the Short Film Corner of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. , later in May, Deadline reports.
The story of ‘Iyawo Mi’ (My Wife) tells the tragic story of a married couple living in the slums of Lagos. A husband returns home one day to find his wife hallucinating and must face dire consequences as he searches for a solution to their situation. The movie features Nollywood actors like Lateef Abedimeji, Bolaji Ogunmola and Segun Arinze alongside Jude Chukwuka, Koye Kekere-Ekun and Blessing Obasi.
In ‘Her Perfect Life’, Pearl Thusi plays the role of a perfect young lady who, despite her success, wants to end her life. The cast of this particular movie includes: Joseph Benjamin, Omowunmi Dada, Uzo Osimkpa, Mary Lazarus and Christian Paul.
“As a filmmaker and storyteller, this recognition means a lot. The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival is a platform that amplifies the voices and perspectives of black filmmakers, and I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work there,” said Abudu.
In recent times, the media mogul has been making moves to deepen his work with African stories among global audiences. In March, he announced a partnership with British film star Idiris Elb and media company Green Door Pictures to boost African talent in the film industry.
