Federico Chiesa and Federico Dimarco have withdrawn from the Italy national team for the first qualifiers of Euro 2024, the national football federation announced on Monday.
Juventus winger Chiesa limped off after coming on as a substitute in Juventus’ Serie A win over Inter Milan.
Tests on the knee showed no injury, but the club said he needs to rest.
Inter left-back Dimarco went earlier in the same game.
West Ham defender Emerson Palmieri has been called up for Dimarco, but has not named a replacement for Chiesa.
Chiesa was a starter in the team that beat England on penalties in the last final of 2021.
Lazio’s Ivan Provedel, also one of four goalkeepers called up by coach Roberto Mancini, withdrew and was replaced by Cremonese’s Marco Carnesecchi.
Italy begin their title defense with a rematch of the Euro 2020 final against England in Naples on Thursday, before traveling to Malta on Sunday.
