Lawyer for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has expressed concern over the denial of proper medical care to his client and leader of the IPOB faction, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a letter dated January 30, the lawyer revealed that DSS does not have adequate medical facilities to treat Kanu’s deteriorating health condition or take care of his left eardrum.
In the letter, he said: “Today our indefatigable client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu – in the DSS detention facility, Abuja, where he is still in unconstitutional detention, was led by our erudite Senior Advocate – Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, KON, OFR”.
“Our indefatigable General Counsel took the opportunity of the visit to discuss Onyendu’s current state of health. Onyendu carefully told him about the lack of adequate medical attention to the barrage of life-threatening illnesses.”
“It is very worrisome that DSS does not have adequate medical facilities to treat Onyendu’s deteriorating health condition.”
“Onyendu seriously lamented the severe pains, especially in his left ear. He also shared that a previous scan at SSS’s request revealed that he needed an advanced surgery to repair his left ear. Forcefully kidnapped in Kenya and brutally returned to Nigeria in June 2021.
“All in all, Onyendu urgently needs advanced medical treatment and surgical operation in his deteriorating health condition, especially in his left ear.”
“After 45 days from November 18, 2022, when he was examined by the DSS doctor, he said that if his case did not improve, he would have to undergo surgery immediately to save what is left of his left ear.”
“He lamented that the DSS has met with a brick wall of repeated warnings and pleas to comply with his doctor’s orders.”
“While in solitary confinement, DSS has also denied him access to his private physician for an independent medical evaluation as ordered by the court.”
Ifeanyi also stated that the leader of the legal team, Mike Ozekhome, has expedited action against any incident.
“Our Iroko lawyer, Ozekhome, took note of Onyendu’s medical concerns very carefully and has immediately taken full legal action to prevent any untoward incident.”
“The man of letters spent quality time with Onyendu in his talk as he briefed Onyendu on the current status of our appeal before the Supreme Court which the Federal Government is deliberately stalling”.
The letter also disclosed that the case seeking the Department of State Services and its Director General Kanu to allow access to his medical team and records is billed before the Federal High Court in Abuja this week.
