A group, the South-East Coalition for Sustainable Development, lamented that the activities of criminal elements in the region were affecting the socio-economic development of the region.
This was as the group appealed to the people of the region to cooperate with the Nigerian Armed Forces to stop the senseless violence and killings going on in the region.
The chairman of the group, Onu Ikenna, and his secretary, Uchechi Mgbidi, in a statement on Monday called on the military to ensure that the county elections are held in a secure environment.
The statement read in part: “We call on our people to support the military because the developmental progress associated with the Igbo is being eroded by the activities of a few.
“We cannot continue this trivial violence and murder that has begun to take the form of cannibals.
“We also welcome the promise by the CDS that the military and other security agencies will not tolerate threats to the 2023 general elections. This is the time for our people to speak up on who should govern their own affairs. They should not be denied that right.
“However, we urge the residents to support the non-kinetic measures by the military to ensure the return of peace to the region by Nigerians.”
