The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhasan Doguwa, has been re-elected to represent Doguwa/Tudunwada Federal Constituency in Kano.

His victory comes weeks after police charged him with murder.

Police in Kano charged Mr. Doguwa with murder for killing three people during the February 25 election.

The lawmaker was involved in a violent confrontation between members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), which left three people dead and a campaign office of the opposition party burnt down in Tudun Wada. Kano Local Government Area.

Police said the lawmaker was arrested and charged along with other accomplices.

“The lawmaker was charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt and mischief by fire, causing disturbance,” police spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa said.

Later, his election was declared a undecided.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner of the by-election for Tudun-Wada/Doguwa constituency on Saturday.

INEC director Sani Ibrahim said Mr. Doguwa got the highest number of votes cast, 41,573, defeating his nearest rival, Yushau Salisu of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), who got 34,831 votes.

By-elections were held in eight local government wards of Tudunwada.

Saturday’s by-election was reportedly marred by voter suppression and intimidation.

Mr. Doguwa will represent the constituency for a fifth term and is believed to be eyeing the position of Speaker of Parliament.
