The former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan believes Cristiano Ronaldo benefited from a controversial penalty goal call against Ghana in their 2022 World Cup Group H match at the 974 Stadium in 2022. PUNCH Sports supplement the reports
Portugal won the frantic game 3-2 with goals from Jao Felix and Raphael Leao after Andre Ayew had canceled out Ronaldo’s goal.
Boss Osman Bukhari scored Ghana’s second goal, but the Portuguese lifted the Africans’ hopes of victory against a nervous team.
Gyan, who was a pundit on SuperSport TV during the match, called the penalty call soft.
“The penalty for me… I don’t agree because, in my opinion, it was a soft touch. Although Ronaldo was a little earlier, it was not a touch that could have been a penalty. The referee should have at least checked the video assistant referee and made his decision. I think it was too soft for me.’
The former Sunderland striker was clearly not disappointed with his countrymen’s performance and did not fail to hail their never-ending spirit against the Portuguese, even pointing to the moment Ghana changed the face of the game after the equaliser.
“The change came too early. Although Dede Ayew scored, he was tired before, but after he scored, he and the man of the moment, Kudu, were removed and I don’t agree a bit. But at the end of the day, the players rose to the occasion. I think the second half is the best we have seen in this competition so far,” concluded Gyan.
The Black Stars sit bottom of Group H and will be hoping to reignite their campaign when they face South Korea on Monday, with Uruguay in their final group game on Friday, December 2.
