A rapper and songwriter, Oladipo Emmanuel, aka Chinko Ekun, has said that having good people in his life saved him from depression when he was going through tough times. According to him, by that time he had just left his record label, and had lost money in an investment scam.
He said Saturday Beats, “When everything happened, I couldn’t handle the trauma. They told me to leave the house. To clear my mind, I had to go to the Lagos Peninsula to Victoria Island. I had to leave my comfort zone. When I was on the island, I didn’t have many friends; mostly known
“If someone is down, there must be good people around. My lawyer, my best friend, my DJ, my manager and my video director were always there for me. My family has never left me. They always encouraged me to never give up. The good people around me helped me during that period of my life.”
Chinko Ekun, a Law graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, stressed that schooling was not the only form of education. He said: “Education is pretty ambiguous. I’m a rapper, and I think. There’s a difference between education and schooling. I feel like education includes learning outside the four walls of a classroom and being inside.”
The rapper also stated that thoughts of his loved ones receded when thoughts of suicide crossed his mind. He said: “Mine wasn’t really a major suicidal thought like some people think. It just crossed my mind. I couldn’t kill myself because I had to think about the pain I would cause my family and friends. I saw it as selfish.”
Dropping some words of advice to people going through difficult times, Ekun said: “Whatever situation you find yourself in; Do not give up. Make sure you eat and drink plenty of water. No matter what I went through, I always ate and slept well. Meanwhile, at that time, I lost a lot of money due to an investment scam.’
