Four people died and two children escaped a Fox Lake First Nation house fire Saturday night, RCMP said in the northern Alberta town.

Police were alerted to the house fire on Barge Road in Fox Lake at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, RCMP said in a Sunday night news release.

When emergency crews arrived shortly after the call, the house had already been destroyed. Two children, a 5-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, who were believed to be in the home at the time of the fire, have already been taken to the Fox Lake Nursing Station where they were treated. – Life-threatening injuries.
Officers, with the help of arson investigators and a cadaver dog, later found the bodies of four people in the burned home. The remains have been sent to the medical examiner’s office to determine identity and cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing but the fire does not appear to be suspicious, police said.
Fox Lake, 550 km north of Edmonton, is one of three Woodland Cree communities of the Little Red River Cree Nation, on the John D’Or Prairie, east of High Level. Most of the approximately 5,500 residents live on Fox Lake, where there is no year-round access. John D’Or Prairie is home to the Little Red River administrative center, and the Garden River is located in Wood Buffalo National Park.
