An Abuja magistrate court on Tuesday rescheduled the trial of a pastor of the House on the Rock Refuge Church, Aigbe’s mindcharged with illegal possession of weapons.
The court adjourned until May 2 due to the absence of a defense lawyer, who sent a letter requesting permission to remain absent.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command he arrested Mr. Aigbe in Februaryafter a video clip showing him carrying a gun during a Sunday church service went viral on social media platforms.
Footage of the pastor welding an AK-47 rifle in the church pulpit caused an uproar with many commentators expressing safety concerns about the pastor’s action.
The police later charged the pastor, along with Promise Ukachukwu and Olakunle Ogunleye, with criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of prohibited firearms, disturbance and criminal intimidation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the resumption of the trial at a magistrate court in Zuba, FCT, Abuja on Tuesday, Magistrate Abdulaziz Ismail drew attention to a written application for adjournment by a defense lawyer, Uche Uzukwu. the trial
Mr. Ismail stated that the adjournment was made at the request of the absent defense counsel, citing a matter before the election court.
He then adjourned the case till May 2 for hearing.

Charges
NAN reports that the police alleged that the defendants, House on the Rock Refuge Church in Wuye, Abuja, conspired to illegally possess an AK-47 rifle on February 12.
Prosecution counsel, James Idachaba, said the accused got the firearm from a police inspector, Musa Audu, at Wuye Division and was placed on guard duty at the church.
He added that the defendants used the firearm as an illustration while giving a sermon on faith in the church.

The prosecution lawyer said that the defendants made inflammatory and intimidating statements that could cause alarm and breach of peace to the congregation of the church.
The offence, he said, was CAP F28, Section III of the LFN 2004 Arms Act. It is punishable under Section 97, 114 and 397 of the Penal Code.
