President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, earlier scheduled for May 3-7, 2023, to a date to be determined by the incoming administration.
The President gave the approval after meeting with some members of the Federal Council Executive and the President National Population Commission and his team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday (April 28, 2023).
In reaching the decision to postpone the census, the meeting reiterated the critical need to conduct a population and housing census, 17 years after the last census, to gather updated data that will drive the country’s development goals. and improving the standard of living of the Nigerian people.
The President stated that with the completion of the Demarcation of the Counting Areas of the country, with the first and second preliminary tests, the hiring and training of adhoc workers, the hiring of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ICT infrastructure, significant progress has been made. Implementation of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.
The committee also applauded the methodology being put in place to conduct an accurate and reliable census, especially the massive deployment of technology capable of conducting a global census and establishing a sustainable basis for future censuses.
The President also instructed the commission to continue with the preparations for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, to maintain the gains already recorded and to give the incoming administration a basis to consolidate these achievements.
