Former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder has called on Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder to bench Nigeria international Calvin Bassey following a poor run of form.
Bassey has come under heavy criticism for his poor performances since joining Ajax from Glasgow Rangers for €23 million in the summer.
“Bassey who can’t build, (Jurien) Timber who isn’t doing well and then you don’t want to build a controlling midfielder. Then it becomes quite difficult in the formation and you don’t play football,” Dutch media. football news Sneijder said.
The former Ajax player believes that Edson Álvarez is better than Bassey in the defensive role and asked Schreuder to put him in that position.
“You have to have someone who can play the ball between the lines for (Steven) Berghuis. I might put it on the defensive.
“Take Bassey out and put Álvarez back on the line. Defending is all Álvarez can do. A line back could be very important for Ajax.
“I’m not happy with Bassey, in general Ajax defenders can play good football. That has always been a principle. I think he’s a bad defender and can’t play football very well. It’s quite silly not to be able to play football well when you play for Ajax.’
Despite the criticism, the 22-year-old defender has been a key player in Schreuder’s side, making 12 appearances and scoring one goal with two assists in the Eredivisie.
