Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes that cup matches should go straight to penalties if the teams are tied after 90 minutes without extra time.
In most knockout tournaments today, an extra 30-minute period is played if the score is tied.
“I think it’s the situation of the game that we should go directly, and not in extra time,” Simeone said in a press conference on Wednesday.
“There is already a lot of time to play.”
Atletico visits Real Madrid on Thursday in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.
In the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, both semi-finals went to extra time and penalties, with Real Madrid and Barcelona beating Valencia and Real Betis respectively.
Real Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini also complained about having to play extra time.
“With the high pace at which games are played now, extra time should not exist,” said Pellegrini.
“It’s asking too much, given the speed we played today.”
