A veteran juju musician, Wale Thompson, has urged artists to give due credit to the original owners of songs when sampling.
Talking about the changes he would like to see in the music industry, he said Sunday wave, “I’d like the upcoming artists to give the songwriters the credit they deserve when they sample their original songs. Also, I’d like to see latter-day broadcasters give more exposure to old-school acts and other genres of music, aside from Afrobeat.”
The singer also said that he had some dreams that were yet to come true. He said: “Yes, I still have some dreams that I would like to make come true. I would love to have a commercial music studio where artists can record. I would also like to have a nightclub dedicated exclusively to live music acts, where I would also perform regularly.” .
Sharing his thoughts on how young people are more inclined towards hip hop and afrobeat as opposed to juju music, he said, “I think it’s a generational thing. The youth of today were born when hip hop and afrobeat were being broadcast the most in the mainstream media. Those are the only genres they listen to all the time because they dominate the airwaves. The way to bridge this gap is to ensure that other Nigerian genres like juju, fuji and highlife get enough airplay on radio, television and other media platforms.
