The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has disqualified former Minister of Niger Delta Godswill Akpabio from contesting as the Senator representing Akwa-Ibom North West Senatorial District in the 2023 General Election.
The verdict was handed down on Monday afternoon in the Federal Capital Territory.
Prior to this ruling, PUNCH reported on September 15, 2022 that the Federal High Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognize Akpabio as the Senatorial candidate of the Progressive Congress.
The court ordered the election judge to accept and publish Akpabio’s name as the 2023 APC senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North/West senatorial district.
In the judgement, Justice Emeka Nwite said INEC acted illegally by refusing to accept and publish Akpabio’s name after it was submitted by the APC.
