The Anambra State Government has ordered “land grabbers” and owners of illegal structures inside the premises of the Awka Township Stadium to vacate the premises.
The Chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, Patrick-Estate Onyedum announced the directive when he inspected the stadium on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr. Onyedum inspected the abandoned gate, the indoor sports hall and the general layout of the stadium area.
“It is unfortunate that any person or group can enter Anambra government property and erect structures within the perimeter fence without consulting the government or obtaining its approval,” Mr. Onyedum said.
He added that the State Government, through the Ministry of Lands and the Urban Planning Office, will take over its entire property.
“There is no doubt about the boundaries of this Awka stadium. The premises are well fenced. But it is surprising to see these structures here, and the Sports Committee is not aware of them.
“So we call on people or groups that enter the stadium or erect structures to stop immediately,” said the president of the committee.
Mr. Onyedum said the state government he leads Governor Charles Soldiers was ready to fully own the Awka stadium and turn it into a sports community.
He said the government would build a football field, athletics tracks, indoor sports hall and courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball and handball in the stadium.
The President said the stadium has what it takes to make Awka a sports hub in the South East.
