Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, the leader of the apex body of the Yoruba self-determination struggle, Professor Banji Akintoye, has resigned.
Akintoye’s resignation was learned to have followed alleged clashes between members of the self-determination group.
But announcing Akintoye’s decision on Thursday, the secretary general of the group, Tunde Amusat, said the former leader of the Yoruba Nation had handed over the reins of leadership to his former deputy, Professor Wale Adeniran.
Amusate said Akintoye was handed over to Adeniran for leadership citing old age and weakened body system as reasons.
According to Amusat, the group’s global congress held on December 17, 2022 accepted Akintoye’s resignation and confirmed Adeniran as the new leader of the group.
He added that the proposed constitutional amendment confirming Adeniran’s position as president will be submitted to the next world congress before the end of this year for ratification by registered members.
“Akintoye extolled the principled virtues of Adeniran for his consistent patience in the face of all manner of blackmail, calumny and defamatory assertions hurled against him in the past by what he (Akintoye) described as “disgruntled elements”.
“Adeniran is a retired Assistant Professor of African Studies and pioneer Commissioner of Education in Osun State. He is from Ile-Ife,” the statement read.
